Yunus Centre Press Release (September 13, 2018)

The story of Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus and Grameen Bank is now part of the national curriculum for the Grade Seven students of Canada. “Complete Canadian Curriculum Grade 7” is a text book for the grade Seven students in Canada in which they learn Mathematics, English, History, Science and Geography. The story of Professor Yunus and Grameen Bank has been featured in the English text book.

The story highlights how Professor Yunus went to a poor village in Bangladesh to find a woman who used to make bamboo stools but was still struggling financially due to the high cost of the bamboo and the high interest being charged by the village money-lenders. It was then  Yunus lent the woman US $27 from his own pocket to her and others like her, to start their own business to get out of the vicious cycle of poverty.

The main learning of the story is to teach the kids how the concept of micro-credit  came into being and how it has affected lives of many people. The work that Grameen Bank has put in continuously to act on this concept to bring the society out of poverty and build an economically strong nation.

Similar stories and articles have also been included in the high school  text books of India, US and Japan from which the younger generation can get to know about microcredit and social business, and how they can be helpful in  the development of a country.
